The Ruhr's key strengths as a logistics location are:
- Its central position on the national and European logistics and transport networks
- The potential provided by a well-educated labour market
- Europe’s largest concentration of purchasing power, centered on the Rhine-Ruhr axis
The region's highly developed transport infrastructure provides excellent accessibility:
- The region has six hundred kilometers of autobahn, the central east - west arteries being the A 2, A 42 and the A 40. The A 1, A 3, A 43, A 45 and A 52 link north and south.
- In addition, the Ruhr also has no less than 730 km of trunk roads and 1,990 km of other highways.
- The region's tightly meshed rail network handles more than 100 million tonnes of freight annually on its 1,600 km of track.
- The Ruhr's outstanding logistical infrastructure is rounded off by 570 km of navigable waterways accessible from a well equipped range of harbours, transshipment centres and freight terminals.
Thanks to the benefits of these locational conditions, some 5,700 logistics companies provide high-quality services throughout the value chain from our region. Around 160,000 employees in the core and secondary sector achieve a combined annual turnover of 9.7 billion euros, making the region one of Europe's leading logistics locations.
